M.2 PCIe CAN FD Expansion Cards for Industrial Communications
In industrial communications, common options include RS-232/422/485 and CAN Bus. Compared to traditional serial interfaces, CAN Bus supports multi-node connectivity, provides real-time responsiveness, and integrates error detection. This has made it the standard backbone for AGVs/AMRs, robotics and energy systems such as BMS. However, as data demands continue to grow, classic CAN 2.0, limited to 1 Mbps bandwidth and 8-byte payloads, has become a bottleneck. This is where CAN FD comes in. It retains the proven reliability of CAN while offering higher speed and larger payloads, making it a key step for industrial upgrades.Challenges of Industrial Networks
AGVs/AMRs, robotic arms, and energy gateways now require faster control loops, denser data exchange, and 24/7 reliability. Classic CAN 2.0 often struggles with bus overload and increased latency in high-speed motion control, sensor fusion, and large-volume data logging. At the same time, harsh electrical conditions and limited chassis space set higher expectations for expansion card design.

How Cervoz CAN FD Addresses These Challenges

Cervoz introduces two new M.2 PCIe CAN FD expansion cards, MEC-CAN-2F02i (dual-channel) and MEC-CAN-2F14i (quad-channel), engineered to meet these exact needs.

- Higher Speed, Seamless Transition
CAN FD delivers up to 5 Mbps data-phase speed and up to 64-byte payloads, reducing cycle times and bus load. Mixed-mode operation ensures CAN 2.0A/B and CAN FD nodes can coexist, minimizing migration risk. - Industrial-Grade Reliability
Each port provides 2.5 kV isolation and 15 kV ESD protection, with an operating range of –40°C to +85 °C. The design complies with ISO 11898-1:2015 and ensures dependable operation in 24/7 environments.
- Flexible Form Factors with Full Integration Support
The MEC-CAN-2F02i uses M.2 2280 (B+M key) with DB-9 connectors for straightforward installation. The MEC-CAN-2F14i features a 3-in-1 breakaway design, supporting 2242, 2260, and 2280 M.2 form factors, with modular daughter boards ideal for space-constrained or multi-channel deployments. Both ship with brackets and cables for ready-to-use integration. Host connectivity is PCIe x1 Rev. 2.0, with support for Windows 7–11 and Linux SocketCAN, plus an SDK to simplify application development and automated testing.
